Primates tend to develop an inner feeling that tells them they are getting better or worse at some action, even when the indications received from the surrounding are random; a feeling that explains the fondness attributed to gambling, said Benjamin Hayden, assistant professor brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester. Another explanation that refers to this gambling affection observed in humans as well as monkeys is the constant looking after patterns in the world. “If you find a nice juicy beetle on the underside of a log, this is pretty good evidence that there might be a beetle in a similar location nearby, because beetles, like most food sources, tend to live near each other,” explains Hayden. Another anecdote worth mentioning is the caring behavior monkeys have been observed expressing. According to the conducted research, monkeys are able to take care of cats while gambling, an action sometimes referred to as “monkey-business”.
While evolutionary explanations are supplied by researchers regarding the gaming, for the gamers themselves the science seems less appealing.
